Climate Change and Agriculture:
A Review Article with Special Reference to India

T. Jayaraman

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of climate change and agriculture, while paying some specific attention to the impact of climate change on Indian agriculture. This broad-brush account covers both the agronomic and economic aspects of the impact of climate change, as well as a critique of the methodologies used to estimate them. The paper ends with some comments on Indian agricultural policy in the era of climate change. An extended Appendix provides a compendium of the likely impact of climate change on the yield and productivity of several major crops in India; on water-related parameters such as evaporation, water runoff and soil moisture; and on soil productivity, pests and crop diseases.
